Default Download App

Once Motrix is your default handler, a magnet link clicked in the browser or a double-clicked .torrent file lands straight in the New Task dialog — no copy-paste needed. Both switches live in Settings → Integration → System protocols.

Turn on “Open magnet links with Motrix”. From then on, clicking a magnet: link in your browser opens Motrix with the torrent ready to add.

The first time, your browser may ask for confirmation — something like “Open Motrix?” with an always allow option. Allow it once and the flow becomes seamless.

Note

Motrix handles magnet: links plus its own motrix:// links. Proprietary schemes like thunder: or ed2k: are not supported.

Torrent files

Turn on “Open .torrent files with Motrix”. Once set, double-clicking a .torrent file opens it in Motrix, straight into the file-selection view.

If double-clicking still opens another app

Another program may hold the .torrent association. Reclaim it:

  • On a Mac: in Finder, right-click any .torrent file → Get InfoOpen with → choose Motrix → Change All… — this is the exact procedure Motrix’s settings screen recommends.
  • On Windows: right-click a .torrent file → Open withChoose another app → select Motrix and tick Always.
  • On Linux: right-click → Properties / Open With (naming varies by desktop) and set Motrix as the default for application/x-bittorrent.

Several torrents at once

Double-click (or drag onto Motrix) several .torrent files and Motrix queues them politely: one New Task dialog at a time, with a “1 of 3” counter, so every torrent still gets its own file selection.

What’s next

With handoff in place, the natural companion is the browser extension — it captures regular downloads from the browser too, not just magnets and torrents.
